The New York Rangers have signed defenseman Travis Dermott to a professional tryout (PTO) with their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. But here's where it gets controversial: Dermott, who hasn't played this season due to a shoulder injury, is hoping to convert this tryout into an NHL deal. And this is the part most people miss: despite his struggles in the NHL, Dermott has a pathway to an NHL contract, and he's not alone in his pursuit.
Dermott, a 29-year-old, 6'0" defenseman, is entering his 10th professional season. He's had a challenging career, marked by concussions and various injuries, which have limited him to just one 50-game season since 2021-22. Despite these setbacks, he's managed to maintain a positive rating of +12 across 348 NHL games, scoring 16 goals and 62 points.
His journey to the NHL has been a rollercoaster. He started as a stable bottom-pairing fixture for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but injuries and concussions took their toll. He spent time with the Arizona Coyotes, recording seven points and a -14 rating in their final season. After a PTO with the Edmonton Oilers, he signed a two-way deal but only played 10 games before being claimed by the Minnesota Wild. He suited up nine times for the Wild before returning to the Oilers and then being sent to the AHL Bakersfield Condors.
Now, with the Hartford Wolf Pack, Dermott has a chance to prove himself again. While his possession numbers weren't stellar in his brief time with the Oilers and Wild, he has the opportunity to turn things around. Will he be able to convert this PTO into an NHL deal? Only time will tell. And this is where the discussion begins: Do you think Dermott can make the most of this tryout and secure an NHL contract? Share your thoughts in the comments!
