An astonishing $1.5 million is needed to replace the boilers at Saskatoon's Remai Modern art gallery, a cost that's raising eyebrows less than a decade after the building's grand opening! It seems the very heart of this contemporary art haven is facing a critical, and costly, health issue.
Imagine this: a state-of-the-art art gallery, designed to house priceless works of art, relies on a system that's already showing signs of serious wear and tear. That's the reality for Saskatoon's Remai Modern. Even though the gallery only welcomed its first visitors in October 2017, the steam boilers responsible for maintaining the delicate climate control required for art preservation are already in dire need of replacement.
Pam Hamoline, the director of facilities management, presented a stark picture to a city council committee. The report she shared clearly labels the boilers as "aging," and the price tag for their replacement is a hefty $1.5 million. This significant sum will be drawn from a dedicated reserve fund, a fund specifically set aside for crucial upgrades. What's particularly noteworthy is that this $1.5 million represents nearly a quarter of the total contributions made to that reserve fund by the Remai Modern itself.
But here's where it gets a bit concerning: These boilers operate continuously, 24/7, to ensure the perfect environment for the art. This relentless operation, while essential, has unfortunately accelerated their deterioration. Independent engineering inspections have confirmed that both boilers are not just aging, but actively deteriorating. One is experiencing leaks, and the other is showing early signs of failure. To make matters worse, the specific model is now obsolete, meaning the manufacturer no longer provides support, and any attempts at long-term repairs are deemed not feasible.
And this is the part most people miss: Back in late 2023, the Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan issued a warning. They advised that without an upgrade, the boiler plant would require 24/7 supervision. Think about the cost and logistics of that! Fortunately, this constant oversight, which was costing the gallery approximately $150,000 annually, will become unnecessary once the new boilers are installed.
Normally, commercial boilers are built to last for over 20 years. However, the unique, non-stop operational demands at the Remai Modern have significantly shortened their lifespan. City administration isn't exactly surprised by this premature need for replacement. Hamoline explained that the Remai Modern is a "very unique facility," even on a North American scale. Unlike heating systems in other city buildings that operate seasonally and allow for maintenance during shutdowns, the gallery's boilers are always on the job.
Councillor Troy Davies, who was on council during the gallery's construction, mentioned he's heard from residents about this boiler situation. While the $1.5 million replacement won't directly impact the city's operating budget, it's worth noting that the Remai Modern receives substantial taxpayer support. This year, it's slated to receive $6.6 million, and $6.7 million next year. For context, the final cost of the gallery, including its underground parking, came in at a staggering $111.3 million in 2023, a significant jump from the initial $55 million estimate when the project was announced in 2009.
